SUMMIT COUNTY

The county seat of Summit County is in Breckenridge, Colorado. Summit County was established in 1861. It is one of the first seventeen counties that were originated in Colorado by the First Territorial Legislature. It was named Summit County because of the numerous mountain peaks in the county. Summit County is located about sixty miles west of Denver by way of Interstate 70. Studies rank Summit County as 19th out of 64 Colorado counties in population. Summit County contains the towns of Breckenridge, Dillon, Frisco, and Silverthorne. Ski resorts in Summit County include Loveland, Breckenridge, Keystone, Arapahoe Basin, and Copper Mountain. Free public bus transportation in Summit County is furnished by the Summit Stage. The Summit Stage has service to both shopping districts and ski resorts. Medical assistance for the county is provided by the St. Anthony Summit Medical Center. This forty-million dollar hospital facility opened in 2005. It is located at 340 Peak One Drive near the County Commons government building in Frisco, Colorado. The western entrance of the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel on Interstate 70 is in Summit County. The west side is named after the United States President Dwight D. Eisenhower while the eastern side of the tunnel is named after former Colorado State Governor and U.S. Senator Edwin Johnson. It is the longest tunnel in the Interstate highway system and is the highest vehicle tunnel in the world. The tunnel crosses the Continental Divide at over 11,000 feet elevation.
